The driving test is changing on 4th December 2017 and one of the differences will be how the Show me\/Tell me questions are conducted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Tell me\u2019 questions will be at the start of the test, when the car isn\u2019t moving.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Show me\u2019 questions will be asked when you are driving the car, during the practical test.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n To help you prepare, we have provided a list of the Show me\/Tell me safety check questions that the examiner will ask during your driving test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The examiner will ask you a \u2018Tell me\u2019 question when you reach the car and this will be asked before the driving element of the test begins. During the driving element of the test, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate that you can operate one of the following ancillary controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You should note that the \u2018Show me\u2019 questions start by the examiner saying, \u2018when it\u2019s safe to do so\u2019. It is important that you choose an appropriate time to carry out the request. For instance, it would not be deemed \u2018safe to do so\u2019 if you operated the car\u2019s dipped headlights when another road user is in the immediate vicinity, this could mislead the other road user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You should be familiar with the location, function and use of the relevant controls. You should be fully conversant with the method of using each control component on the vehicle that you will be using on the day of your test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Manufacturer\u2019s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don\u2019t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some head restraints might not be adjustable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No cuts and bulges, a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Explain you\u2019d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a \u2018tell me\u2019 question, you don\u2019t need to physically check the lights).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Explain you\u2019d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a \u2018tell me\u2019 question, you don\u2019t need to physically check the lights).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Explain you\u2019d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on.
